Featured Hairstyle: Mohawk

Also referred to as a ‘mohican’ or ‘Iro’, the mohawk is a distinctive hairstyle where both sides of the head are shaven, leaving a strip of longer hair in the middle. The hairstyle originally took its name from the people of the mohawk nation, but has now been adopted by punk culture, musicians and tastemakers worldwide. Whether your hair is long, short, straight or curly, there is a way to achieve this style. We take a look at different ways to rock the mohawk hairstyles.

The Classic Mohawk

The key to a great mohawk is well cut sides and a well groomed top. Shave the sides of your hair in accordance to your features and face shape. As a general rule, keeping your sideburns will soften the look of your mohawk.

The Braided or Twisted Mohawk

If you’re not ready to commit to the traditional mohawk with shaven sides, you can  use twists or braids to shape your hair into the style. Not only are braids a good way to take daily stress off your hair, they give you the opportunity to see how shaven sides will look before you go for the big chop. You can even braid extensions into the hair for a more dramatic poof.
