In light of the recent natural hair revolution that has rocked black western women, we’ve decided to countdown our five favourite curly haired celebrities/natural hair pioneers.
American actress and former model best best known for her roles in box office hits such as Swordfish, X-Men and Monster’s Ball, Halle Berry is the first celebrity to grace our list of curly hair pioneers. Born to a black father and white mother, the mixed-race beauty has experimented with several curly hairstyles throughout her career, including a mid-length bob and short pixie crop.
Shakira Shakira – we can’t get enough of her Spanish twang, her latin flavour and most of all, those signature curls. Since rising to prominence in 2001, her lush locks, a result of mixed Lebanon and Columbian heritage, have become a become a source of international obsession. In an interview with Glam Belleza Latina magazine, the songstress describes the effort it takes to keep her curls in tack: “It takes dedication! I try not to use products that have alcohol in them, which can dry out my hair. I try to use serums with natural oils, along with sulfate-free shampoo. I’ve had really bad colorists who have burned my hair many times.”
It can’t be easy to being the sibling of a musical icon like Beyonce, yet 28 year old Solange Knowles has refused to live in her big sister’s shadow. As well as releasing two solo albums and appearing on a string of movies, the songstress has successfully managed to gain notoriety within the fashion industry thanks to her vibrant, ethnocentric style. Having graced the pages of Vogue, Elle, Fader, Essence and Lucky magazine rocking kinky hair, Solange has become somewhat of a poster girl for the recent natural hair revolution.
If you are female, aged between 26 and 60, and even remotely romantic you’ll have heard of Carrie Bradshaw. The lead character from the hit TV series ‘Sex and the City’, Carrie (played by Sarah Jessica Parker) first landed on our screens in 1998, immediately stealing our attention with her endearing nature, expensive heels and flirty honey blonde curls. Season 5 saw the character start a new chapter in her life with an immaculate bob hairdo.
Erykah Badu – also known as ‘Medulla Oblangata’, also known as ‘Annie’, also known as ‘Analog Girl in a Digital World’ steals the top spot on our list of favourite curly haired celebrities. Best known for her 2007 hit ‘On & On’, the enigmatic musician/actress has captured the world with her cryptic lyrics, soulful vibe and unfaltering sense of style. Since bursting onto the music scene in 1994, Badu has continued to proudly showcase her natural curls, daring to pioneer ethnocentric hairstyles long before afro hair was widely seen on tv.
